Newton & Co Catalogue of lantern slides, Part II, 1911/1912
The image appears on page 259 of the 1st Edition, Volume One of "Living Races of Mankind" published by Hutchinson & Co in 1901. The image is published by permission of Newton & Co and is titled "Armenian merchants and wives". Of note, the image is included in the "Nestorians" section of the Newton & Co series: "The Persians, Kurds, and Nestorians, their manners and customs" and is titled "Armenian merchants and wives escaped from Van during late massacres".
The image is reproduced on page 59 of Volume IV of “Du Khorassan au pays des Backhtiaris: trois mois de voyage en Perse” by Henry-Rene D’Allemagne published in 1911 by Hachette, Paris, France. The image is titled "Armeniennes en costume de ceremonie". However, the two men in the original image have been removed. Of interest, is that the magic lantern slides in the Nelson collection are each accompanied with a glass negative slide. The glass negative slide associated with this particular image also has the two men removed from the image. This raises the possibility that the slides may have been used by Henry-Rene D’Allemagne, as this is the case with at least two other images.
